Cu mancia fa muddichi | Sicilian Sayings

And after a long time, here we are with a brand new Sicilian saying! I know, I know, you missed us, but we promise we are coming back stronger than ever! Today’s saying is one of those sayings that have entered the Olympus of Sicilian sayings, a truly iconic phrase!

Cu mancia fa muddichi

“The one who eats makes crumbs.”

The literal translation may not instantly elucidate the intended meaning, which is way deeper than what you may think! This proverb serves as a poignant reminder that whenever you undertake an action, it is inevitable to commit occasional errors. By extension, when you partake in eating, it is entirely normal to leave some crumbs in your wake (which, incidentally, can be tidied up with minimal effort). Ultimately, there is no harm in minor missteps, as long as they do not escalate into significant blunders. Hence, exercise caution and refrain from conflating trivial slip-ups with major mistakes!

  1. Of course I translated who eats makes crumbs but I didn’t think of the proverbs meaning until I read the article. Very good!
