Sicily: No Diet Zone
There is one thing that you need to forget when you go on holiday. Especially if you’re going to a place with some amazing food as Sicily: Diet. By the end of the holiday, you’ll end up for sure with few extra kilos but with a big smile on your face – the food is amazing and enjoying that in a beautiful context as Sicily is even better.
I’ve spent the last 10 days in Palermo visiting my family, and it was amazing as always! This time I’ve tried to collect some pictures to upload here during my usual pilgrimage through my favorites Sicilian dishes.
So, this is my personal Top 5:
Pane Ca Meusa (Spleen Sandwiches!): Soft bread buns filled with boiled and then fried (not in oil, but in lard) spleen and lung scratches, topped with Caciocavallo cheese and Lemon. One word: #Delicious. Are you curious? Have a look at our post “Bizarre Food of Sicily”!
Panelle e Cazzilli (Panelle and Croquette!): You can have both of them in a soft bun or “naked” on a plate. You can find the recipe here: Click me!
Pizza: Well, I know, Pizza is not a “Typical Sicilian Food”. What’s the fuss about? This pizza is something that goes behind the concept of pizza it self.. Considering that basically is a “pane ca meusa” disguised as a pizza: in fact, Meusa (spleen and lung), Ricotta and Caciocavallo cheese are the amazing toppings of this fairly unique pizza. Not easy to digest, but it was an amazing experience!
Arancine: (Recipe here!)I have the feeling that I should dedicate a whole blog post to Arancini (or Arancine, as we say in Palermo!) and I think I will at some point, mainly because there are a lot of things to say from an historic point of view. For the newbies: what is an Arancino? Deep fried rice ball, stuffed with bolognese or Mozzarella and Ham, or anything else you can think about. My favorite one? Indeed the one with Mozzarella and Ham (we call it “Arancina al burro“).
Rosticceria: (Recipe here!) There’s a place in Palermo (actually is a brand that has loads of shops) called “Ganci” that sells this kind of street food called Rosticceria, at the amazing price of 1€ each. You can find oven cooked Calzone, Rollò (similar to the sausage roll), Pizzetta (small pizzas) or deep fried Arancine, Crostini or Spitini.
