With the festa dei morti just around the corner, we thought we’d dust off a very interesting mini-series of videos produced by the BBC in the United Kingdom. On the website of the British network a couple of years ago aired on October 31, the documentary “The beautiful dead”, rediscovering the Sicilian tradition of il giorno dei morti. This mini-series of 3 videos of about 6 minutes each, takes us on a very interesting journey through the Sicilian beliefs related to the cult of the dead, enriched by interviews with anthropologists, scientists and writers. You can watch all 3 videos below. A journey that passes through the Sicilian Mummies Project (Progetto Mummie Siciliane), a project that aims to study and document the entire heritage of preserved bodies present on the island, coordinated by anthropologist and paleopathologist Dario Piombino-Mascali and sponsored by the Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian identity, directed by archaeologist Sebastiano Tusa.
